Et si tu cloudis oculos…

I absolutely love that song, and anything to do with the story of Pompeii.

Bastille’s song “Pompeii,” sung in Latin!

Et si tu cloudis oculos…
Sentit paene quasi nihil transformavit?
Et si tu cloudis oculos…
Sentit paene quasi aderas prius?

[But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?]

SO lovely!

I absolutely love that song, and anything to do with the story of Pompeii. It’s one of those fascinating events in human history I can actually connect to – its horror is only made more trenchant by the way they were able to preserve the bodies. Read the article, it’s engrossing!  I wish I had time to study Latin. It just seems so COOL.

The pictures on the tiled walls of Pompeii inspired me to create the ruins of Averras, in my book. Images of other people performing daily tasks like fishing, weaving, and even dancing fascinate the main character and make her wonder about the people depicted, since her experience with the people of her village is mostly negative. To massively understate, the people of her village are mostly narrow-minded jerks trying to build a new society in the forest, and violently reject anything they don’t understand or trust. Don’t worry – she escapes!

I never saw the movie with Jon Snow though, just didn’t get around to it.
