Y’all Ready for This?

Guess what next week is….

That’s right! It’s the beginning of HORROR MOVIE MONTH here at Late to the Theater! And we’ve got a whole big RANGE coming up! I’ve been planning and scribbling ideas and having all kinds of fun figuring out the themes for the weeks!

  • Week 1 – The Suburbs: Hell is Other People – Ride along on your BMX while we deconstruct some of that most 80s of juxtapositions, horror in the suburbs, with well-known films The Burbs, Poltergeist, and the less well-known Lady in White. If you enjoyed Stranger Things, you will find some familiar ground here. I’ve covered The Burbs before, but that was then and this is now and I’ve got lots of new corny jokes.
  • Week 2 – A Walk Among the Fandoms: My Trip to Spooky Empire – In which I recount my experience at Spooky Empire, Orlando’s horror convention. And I’ll talk about my John Clare costume! Excitement!
  • Week 3 – Werewolf Week! – Fur, fangs, talons, subtext about sexuality; the gang’s all here with Dog Soldiers,  The Howling, and one that’s very near and dear to my heart, The Company of Wolves. Get your beast-fix and bring a doggie bag (hurr) for week 3.
  • Week 4 – TBA. I like to end with a bang, so the last week should be something really cool, and I haven’t figured out what that is, yet. So who knows? Maybe it’s all Stephen King movies, maybe it’s all old-school, or maybe it’s all new-school, maybe it’s all cannibals. Time will tell!

So stay tuned! Our first entry will be hitting the intarwebz next Monday morning at 8.

Be there or be square!

  1. Zombie a Go-Go week! Zombies are kind of played out, but there are a lot of good, classic zombie films; Carnival of Souls, White Zombie, Night of the Living Dead (1968), Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, the list is endless!

Dario Argento week! Suspiria, Demons, Stendhal Syndrome, Zombi, The Gallery Murders, Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

The 80s are coming to kill you! The Shining, The Thing, Reanimator, Evil Dead 2, Creepshow, Friday the 13th, The Fog, I don’t have the time to list all of them!

Horror mind-fucks: Event Horizon, In the Mouth of Madness, Cube, Jacob’s Ladder, Eraserhead, 13 Ghosts.

The Devil, you say: Prince of Darkness, Race with the Devil, The Exorcist, The Exorcist 3, The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby

Laugh in the face of death: Fright Night, Monster Squad, Cemetary Man, Return of the Living Dead, Shawn of the Dead, Dead Alive, Zombieland, Fido, Reanimator, What We Do in the Shadows.

In strange eons: Whisper in the Darkness, Call of Cthulu, Dagon, Reanimator, The Thing on the Doorstep, The Last Lovecraft, Cast a Deadly Spell.

One of my personal favorites for halloween is an obscure film from 1977 called The Sentinel, starring Chris Sarandon of Fright Night fame, and an elderly, indefatigable John Carradine, and a host of popular actors at the relative beginning or ending of their successful careers. It’s not very well acted, and is kind of a slow burn of a horror movie, but the big payoff was more than worth it!

    1. I’ve seen The Sentinel!
All of these are good suggestions – I’m leaning toward the horror-comedy angle so things end on a lighter note. Time will tell!

  2. Looking forward to Werewolf Week. I plan on doing my usual hodgepodge amongst all the horror shows.

Or maybe just Horror as a theme all month long then, with Supernatural, American Horror Story, The Walking Dead,The Exorcist, and Ash vs The Evil Dead:Seaon II.

    1. There’s a LOT of good stuff there, you really can’t go wrong with any of those! A friend gave me Ash Vs Evil Dead and I still haven’t managed to sit down and watch it.
I look forward to your posts this month! 😀

    1. Yaaaayyyy!!! Hi Jessi! I am going to upload all the photos from our trip to my Google Drive and share them with you all at once. I figured that’d be easier than doing them in drips and drabs.
      Miss you already!
