I feel like we’re entering a phase of GoT in which people are finally making the right goddamn decisions.
Hello and welcome to Game of Thoughts! This is a feature I’m testing out in which I do little, rambly recaps of the night’s episode. They WILL contain spoilers. They are nothing more than a recap and chance for GoT fans to have a bit of a natter and react as situations permit. They were inspired by the incredible, in-depth and insightful posts of Patrick Sponaugle, except his are intelligent and mine are just squeeing. There will be spoilers, but I will put everything behind a cut so as not to ruin anyone’s good time. I will continue with movie reviews, but just once a week or so.
I love Doctor Orpheus from the Venture Bros., who acts as a parody of Doctor Strange, but I can’t wait to see the real thing in action.
Quick Check-In:
I’m seeing the Animated Shorts collection tonight at the Enzian. Shorts are ALWAYS a wonderful grab bag, ranging from ‘meh’ to ‘GOOD LORD’ so I am really looking forward to that.
Last night I watched a real treat- Hush. It’s by the same writer/director as Oculus, which I reviewed in a bit a few months ago and while that had some nice things going on for it, ultimately I didn’t care for it. Hush is a completely different animal – this might be my new favorite horror movie! I want to do a whole review on it but I’ll just let you know the premise: a deaf female horror writer has moved to an isolated cabin. Her idyllic routine is upset when a sadist appears and begins a sick game of cat-and-mouse. The tension is so thick and tight that it had me in knots! Well-acted, brilliant use of space, lighting, and pacing, and a lead actress who is intensely charismatic while never saying a word. It could have been incredibly stupid and exploitative but instead it’s just masterful. If you’re a fan of horror thrillers YOU WILL BE PLEASED.
The Doctor Strange trailer has dropped and it’s SO THRILLING!
I really, really can’t wait. I love the Marvel films in general but this one looks ESPECIALLY up my alley! I love occult stuff. I’m aware of the controversy of the film containing a lot of Asian mysticism while being mysteriously bereft of Asian people and that makes me sad, but I feel like that is a bigger conversation for another day*. Still, it looks AWESOME. I love Doctor Orpheus from the Venture Bros., who acts as a parody of Doctor Strange, but I can’t wait to see the real thing in action. Also Benedict Cumberbatch’s fruity magic bathrobe is magnificent and I can’t wait to see him waving his hands around shouting things. His costume is beautiful and I want one. Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, huge galactic imagery, cities turned upside down – they need to stop reading my diary.
GO MAGIC BATHROBES, GO!!!!
That’s all I’ve got for today. I’m taking notes on everything I see through the Florida Film Festival and will publish a big post about it next week.
Have a great day!
*If you are interested in this controversy, the Nerds of Color have posted about it. The comments going on below the post are VERY helpful for understanding.
In Which The Author Recounts The Thrilling Tale of Illness, Recovery, and a Visit to Target
Ever since I changed my eating habits and got healthier, I noticed that I also got sick a lot less, being down to only about once or maybe twice a year. And when I do get sick, I am REKT.
The data checks out.
I have been really, really sick before. I have a fond memory of being in fever-induced delirium in 2003 when my room mate was out of town and my then-boyfriend was spending time with his parents shopping for a weight bench. Why he left me at home sweating, insane, and alone I can’t say, but I remember the time period quite vividly because I was very excited about Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix coming out and I couldn’t wait to come back down in order to read it.
Another previous illness led to my Dayquil Hoedown post, wherein I wound up emotionally compromised after watching the The Fox and The Hound for the first time in 27 years.
But friends… friends.
I have not been this messed up from an illness in a long, long time.
Read on for the hallucinatory play-by-play, and if nothing else to help convince you to get that flu shot all the cool kids are getting these days!
In all, Copper was a good show. The production design was great, and if anything the show suffered from an overabundance of story rather than too little.
BBCTV’s Copper
Flipping through the Netflix Instant Watch feeds, I kept coming upon the show Copper. I added it to my queue and if my mind worked like Windows Explorer the file name was \\hotpeople_periodcostumes_possiblydepressing_watchwhiledrunk.mov. Having watched the show, I feel validated about my naming convention, although it is certainly worth discussing in detail.
Copper is an ensemble piece following several interrelated stories in 1860s New York. One group, the Irish, is made up of cops headed by the titular Detective Kevin “Corky” Corcoran, a scrappy looker of a gent (Tom Weston-Jones) and veteran of the still-occurring Civil War. He immigrated as a boy, and spent a difficult childhood in the streets of Five Points. After seeing the way the Irish were treated, he joined the Army to provide for his wife and daughter, who begin the show missing. In the army, he served with Matthew Freeman (Ato Essandoh) under Major Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmidt), who each serve as contact points for the other groups in the show.
I read another review of the first episode somewhere (can’t remember where and searching my history is proving fruitless) that describes it as VERY good. I am cautiously optimistic!
I’ve been devouring all the recent Preacher news like it’s made out of candied bacon.
OOOOOOOOOOO – The Dominic Cooper Casting announcement
Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy – Jesse’s compatriot and an Irish punk-rock vampire Cassidy casting announcement

I won’t go into a big description of the story in today’s post, and I might try to do another one that introduces people unfamiliar with the comic in a spoiler-free way.
Fitting for today (St. Patrick’s Day!), Preacher is written by one of my favorite comics writers, Garth Ennis, who is Irish. He also wrote some of the best storylines (in my opinion) of Constantine – that show turned out to be somewhat disappointing, but I’m HOPING that Preacher delivers.
Fingers crossed!
My Mom had the DNA test thingy done – I am 38% Irish. I don’t hold much with the test results (since Ireland is a country, not an ethnicity – I guess I would be Celtic or Gaelic? Does that even make sense?) but she was excited about it and I am trying to encourage her to get out and do things. She’s been rather down lately.
But I’m not going out in a green paper hat to drink green beer or whiskey until I’m sick, either. I’ll stay in and spend time with my imaginary boyfriend for the holiday, Kevin ‘Corky’ Corcoran from BBCTV’s Copper. An Irishman just trying to make good as a cop in 1860s New York, he fights for truth and justice but also because he just likes getting in fights.
