Stranger In a Strange, Terrible Land

I cleaned myself up and ventured out in search of food and entertainment. Happily, Deadpool was playing at my favorite local place, so I saw that while eating mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers.

Sometime around my birthday last year, someone wished me happy birthday. Lots of people did, but this person’s well-wish stood out, because of its ominous addendum:

“Happy 37th Birthday! Welcome to the land of the two-day hangover!”

I wish I could remember who it was; less because I want to tell them that they are right, than because I want to get the next winning lotto numbers from them; because they spoke horrible, horrible truth.

Here is a breakdown of my weekend.

Stay Tuned!

I’m still writing every night, and also watching things now that I have internet again. I’m really enjoying Archer, and Sunday was a huge marathon of streaming. I worked my way through:

So far, I’ve dropped about 1200 words on Immortal Beloved. After a few more edits, I’ll be posting that one tomorrow morning. Stay tuned!

In also exciting news, I dropped off my violin bow to be restrung. I’ve been meaning to do it for a while, and after watching a movie with so much emphasis on music and performance, I realized how much I missed playing my violin. I played in Middle and High school (7 years), took private lessons on weekends and even played in a youth symphony, which culminated in a performance onstage at the Kravis Center. I’ll do a bigger write-up later on that.

Technical Difficulties – Please Stand By

But once I replace the router (should be soon!) we’ll be back to our irregular and mostly unscheduled posts. I finally saw The Martian! And I did see Labyrinth in the theater, and it was awesome.

Last week, my wireless router popped its clogs. I still have internet, but have to attach a super-short Ethernet cable to my laptop in order to use it, so I haven’t been watching much except dvds and blu-rays.

This.

The upside is that I have gotten a lot of fiction writing done, reread Stephen King’s Insomnia (not as good as I remembered), and managed to knit a scarf for a friend. And I’ve also just… enjoyed some of that unwinding that forced sabbaticals tend to inflict.

I hope you’re having a good week!

Five Hangover Cures for New Year’s Day

Today’s post is intended for everyone who will party hard tonight, wake up late tomorrow, and then move as little as possible for many hours as our livers work patiently to save us from ourselves.

Many people will make a New Year’s resolution and get up early on New Year’s Day, energized by their resolve and the promise of a new year, and GET ON whatever they’ve chosen to change. Yardwork will be done, closets organized, gym memberships researched and healthy eating embraced. I will do this, because I am one of these people, although I try not to be obnoxious about it.

HOWEVER, many New Year’s Days are lost to the crushing misery of a New Year’s Day Hangover. Today’s post is intended for everyone who will party hard tonight, wake up late tomorrow, and then move as little as possible for many hours as our livers work patiently to save us from ourselves. I do include myself in that group since anything is possible when I have wine in the house.

Anyhoodle, here are five multi-hour things to watch on Netflix. All share these characteristics:

  • There are few-to-no explosions
  • They are not loud or bright
  • They are somewhat easy to understand, and if you can’t follow along, pleasant to listen to and stare at for several hours

Five Rando Christmas Movies

So I think we all need a break. We need warmth, joy, family and friends, and to remember the important stuff – and I don’t mean all the shit we just put ourselves into debt to buy. I mean the REALLY important stuff.

It’s been a hell of a year, folks.

This year’s news was a constant parade of nightmares and horror, and it was easy to get lost in the torrent of sorrow. The plight of Syrian refugees;  Paris, the City of Lights darkened by terrorism, and then rising from the ashes in glorious solidarity; the destruction of world Heritage sites by madmen; natural disasters; mass shootings; and of course, the inevitable callousness that comes with being inundated with such tidings. I’ll never forget the moment I said the words ‘Wait, which mass shooting from this year are you talking about?’ because there had been too many to keep track of.

So I think we all need a break. We need warmth, joy, family and friends, and to remember the important stuff – and I don’t mean all the shit we just put ourselves into debt to buy. I mean the REALLY important stuff. And so today’s entry includes five movies that celebrate that aforementioned REALLY important stuff. I am sorry they’re all just for Christmas – I wish I knew of some Jewish and Muslim holiday movies to discuss! Maybe next year I’ll have found some.

These are all movies my family gets together to watch. My Dad and I get drunk and bray like donkeys at the screen, and my Mom disapproves but laughs along with us.

Have a read and enjoy!
