Horror On the Horizon!

Next week is Netflix Indie Week, with such offerings as bro-heavy found footage frightfest V/H/S, and crummy council flat escapade The Forgotten.

Good morning! I hope this post finds you well-rested and ready to face whatever this day shall bring!

For the last several years, I’ve dedicated the month of October to one of my great loves in life… horror movies. I’ve fallen off blogging a lot this year for various reasons, but I am dead set on keeping up with this tradition. I WON’T CRAP OUT AGAIN. It’s my intent that these reviews be at least, if not more, entertaining as the movies they cover.

So stay tuned! Next week is Netflix Indie Week, with such offerings as bro-heavy found footage frightfest V/H/S, and crummy council flat escapade The Forgotten. As always, I do my best to be both fair to the filmmakers AND entertaining in my reviews.

And to celebrate, please enjoy my favorite tweet ever from Pennywise Dancing, Numa Numa. This has been playing in my head nonstop since last week, and it’s kept me sane in the face of a severely depressing news cycle.

See you next week!

In Theaters Now: IT (and also I am still alive!)

Orlando and the rest of the Southeast was recently lambasted by Hurricane Irma, and we were very, VERY fortunate that it had calmed down to a Category 3 and lost strength as it crept up the country’s phallus. Millions are still without power, including civic infrastructure (you never miss streetlights until you don’t have them and realize not everyone knows what to do when they go out) and businesses. The islands were trashed, as the news footage has shown. Apparently Jose’s still out doodling around in the Atlantic, so until that goes away we won’t really be able to unclench and get on with things.

Happily my power only flickered, although I was without internet until Tuesday night and my yard was full of branches.

IT2017
He was right, I did float.

So fitting that one of my favorite stories involving a giant storm hits theaters just as a giant storm hits my state. ART IMITATING LIFE.

As far as IT goes, I enjoyed what was onscreen, but I can’t help but miss everything that didn’t make it, and lament some of the bigger changes. I’ll put these behind a cut to to avoid posting spoilers, but if you’ve seen the movie and want to discuss please jump in!

Film Review: Under the Shadow (2016)

undertheshadow2
…and barely hanging on.

Longtime readers of my blog are familiar with my constant complaint that quality horror movies are few and far between. It probably makes me a snob, but the older I get the less interested I am in spending time watching something for the sake of supporting the genre. I just don’t have the patience for fountains of gore and crying teenagers in their underwear unless there is an intelligent twist on it, such as Cabin In the Woods or It Follows.

Enter Under the Shadow.

The UK’s entry for foreign language film for the Oscars, it was somehow not nominated. I’ve no idea why, and it’s a shame because this film isn’t just a great scare, it’s important. As I mentioned, intelligent horror films are few and far between, and one with such a riveting premise as Under the Shadow is doubly notable. It’s especially worthy of promotion as the world moves into a more xenophobic phase because it is about precisely that: superstitious thinking.

Busy Times – Check Back Next Week!

I got busy this week working on a lot of fiction writing and such, so no post today, unfortunately.

Check back next week for a review of Under the Shadow, a horror film featuring a mother and daughter trying to survive both a vengeful ghost and daily life in 1980s Tehran!

Grumpy Old Men: I Am Not a Serial Killer and The Good Neighbor

Today I’d like to tell you about two movies I’ve watched recently, both starring actors in their twilight years, who put in a hell of a great performance at not being what they seem.

Lately, I’ve been keeping myself busy a lot. Keeping the ship of my mind from dashing on the rocks of despair and disgorging its precious cargo of sanity (and hotpants!) has become my full-time job, on top of my full-time job, and also writing, my other full-time job.

Chief Wiggam knows a good deal when he sees one.

Keeping busy can be a lot of things – reading, writing, working out, cooking, seeing friends, and of course, watching TV shows and movies.

Today I’d like to tell you about two movies  I’ve watched recently, both starring actors in their twilight years, who put in a hell of a great performance at not being what they seem. There will be NO spoilers today!
