Keep Dancing Orlando

You already know the name of a place where our greatest tragedy occurred; I hope you’ll take a moment to get to know the parts of The City Beautiful that we are proud of!

I know things have been heavy lately, and I can’t really apologize for that. As an Orlando resident with ties to the gay community, I can say we’re doing our best to get by. Now that the attention of the world has drifted off us a bit, we can get busy figuring out what comes next.

A local group was inspired by Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Keep Dancing’ monologue concerning Orlando, and he provides the voiceover for the beginning of this very delightful video. I don’t know these people, or anyone in the video, but I know ALLL of these places. Lake Eola’s fountain and stage! Beefy King! Redlight Redlight! Hawker’s! So many wonderful places no one talks about, outside of the theme parks!

You know the place where our greatest tragedy occurred; I hope you’ll take a peek at parts of The City Beautiful we’re proud of!

I am continuing coverage of Game of Thrones with my Game of Thoughts posts. We’re down to the wire! One episode left – THE BIG ONE. I’m going to a friend’s house to watch it, and they will undoubtedly laugh as I make my notes in my little nerd notebook.

I can’t wait for Sunday!

Have a wonderful rest of your day and please, Keep Dancing!

A Desperately Needed Laugh

I don’t think I’ll be doing a Game of Thoughts this week – I spend a lot of time scrolling through my Facebook feed and wondering what the hell people are thinking when they post insane shit about Pulse.

A friend of mine lifts heavy. He is also a brilliant artist, rapier wit, and all around awesome human being. He showed me a Craigslist ad he wrote for a truck tire he’s selling, and it provided me with a much-needed laugh.

When you play the game of tires, you flip, or you die.

Here’s a GIANT TIRE for all your tire flipping macho needs. If you can flip it, you’re significantly more macho than I am. I’ll use this smaller one and just suffer through the taunts and jeers of neighborhood schoolchildren – unlike you, He-man Thunderthighs.

If you can fit your lower torso into a vehicle to come to my house, you can easily throw this immovable object into your man-hauler. I will not help, as I thought of moving it across the yard earlier to retrieve my purse and ended up getting a hernia and my beard fell off.

For the low-low cost of $30 I’ll cower in fear and point at the tire in my backyard and you can drag it to your truck, or just farmer’s walk it back to your cave. For $35, I’ll wipe my tears off of it first.

Seriously, though. For $30, it’s a steal and you know it. I think it’s roughly 500lb, but I can’t be sure. I can arguably and unprovably deadlift 400 and that thing about made my eyes fall out. Bring a truck and help. If I have to help, I’ll need you to pay me a couple grand to cover blowing my intestines out my belly button.

Call or text show contact info If you call, I won’t pick up and will screen voicemails. I’m avoiding the local schoolkids jeering at me for about dying when I purchased this monster and dropped it and my broken dignity in the backyard. If you’re reading this, it’s still available – and I’m still soaking my ego in epsom salts. Help me. …in the picture, the tire has plastic on it to prevent small animals from mocking me further by setting up a home in it’s sturdy and immovable interior.

I don’t think I’ll be doing a Game of Thoughts this week – I spend a lot of time scrolling through my Facebook feed and wondering what the hell people are thinking when they post insane shit about Pulse. I’d rather just post two episodes next Monday. Day by day, we get a little bit back to normal, whatever that normal was. I will quote Catlyn Stark though – “Laughter is poison to fear.”

Thank you for keeping Orlando in your thoughts. I hope this gave you a laugh, too!

No ‘Game of Thoughts’ Today…

… Out of respect for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. As an Orlando resident with a lot of friends and family in the gay community, I am in shock. Thankfully, they are all safe. My heart goes out to the victims’ families and friends.

Here is John Oliver, making sense of this senselessness:

The City of Orlando is posting the identities of victims as their families are notified. You can find a list here:

City of Orlando – Victims

A series of videos showing how Orlandoans react to such violence can be found here:

#OrlandoStrong

I will be donating blood, but don’t know when. Local places have all hit their requirements, and the donation centers are urging people to make appointments for later.

There is a GoFundMe for the families of the Victims here:

Support Victims of Pulse Nightclub Shooting.

I will probably post Game of Thoughts on Wednesday once I get my mind around to things – I think it’s important that our lives not be controlled by these shitty, hate-filled fucks. We will mourn, we will investigate, we will try to prevent, but we will move forward.

Please keep Orlando in your heart. In particular, help the families and friends of those who were murdered in any way you can; they need to remember that we are here for them.

Florida Film Festival 2016

The Florida Film Festival did not pay or ask me to write this post. I am writing about it to promote the festival and spread the word on Florida’s entertainment culture, which, contrary to popular belief, isn’t just police dash cams of people setting things on fire or news stories chronicling the adventures of Florida Man and Florida Woman.

Regrettably I wasn’t able to see as many films this year as I would have liked, but I still got out a couple of times. It was nice just being out among other filmgoers and seeing all the hullabaloo of people standing in lines at an event.

Well, here we go!

Happy Leap Day! Take Cover!

So when I got home last night to flashing lights and roving deputies, I had that familiar ‘Oh god, not again’ feeling. My neighbor said something about ‘We thought we heard a shotgun!’ before scampering inside.

Leap Day fascinates me. It is basically acknowledging the mismatch between our calendar system and the time that our planet actually takes to orbit the sun.

Leap Day 2012 was a good day. I took a half-day from work, and made a special dinner for myself. I can’t recall if I watched a movie or not but I probably did. I was also celebrating being in a loving, healthy relationship (or so I thought at the time) and just feeling good about life.

Leap Day 2016 has not been off to the greatest start. Last night I got home from dinner at a friend’s house to find my neighborhood swamped with Five-Oh. They were investigating a house one house away from mine, and all the lights were flashing. It put me in mind of an event that had happened before.

Read on for details on my night and why I missed watching the Oscars due a case of ‘Roaming Searchlight-Itis!’
